NZ Holiday - Walking and biking around Lake Wanaka

20th - 22nd October - Lakeside living
Clear Water - the Clutha River near Albert Town - leaving Lake Wanaka

Wanaka settled down for the remainder of our 3 day stopover. The hordes we mingled with on Saturday seem to have melted away. On Sunday there was another Mountain Bike Race, this time a team event on a hillside circuit, looked good fun for all ages. We decided we had better get bikes ourselves. Lake Wanaka is massive and is a very irregular shape. As a result you get a different view from the shore depending on where you are standing riding or walking. Our chosen route was around a Lakeside bike-path that took us, via a peninsula, to the Clutha River outflow. Perfect weather for cycling and a scenic, easy route with a picnic half way. Very pleasant little ride. The following day we walked the Lakeside path to the left of the town. Magnificent vistas and hardly anyone around. We had a picnic by a beach alongside piles of driftwood. A couple walking their dog were bemused because it kept leaving them to visit us. They did not see us sneaking the pooch a few morsels of Corned Beef. Sadly, the water is still very cold so there was no paddling for us. The locals told us they will be swimming soon? The Lake reaches about 18 degrees in Summer.
