NZ Holiday - Nelson Area - Motueka and Kaiteriteri

Exploring the region around Nelson

Rust in Peace

From our base in Richmond, it's an easy drive up the coast to Motueka. It's a great place to wander by the waters edge. Well, it would be waters edge if the tide was in. Of course with the the tide out, the birds come in. Godwits with their long, slightly upturned, beaks were poking about in the mud.  They migrate all the way from Alaska! The longest migration of any bird. Can't blame them though. It's a lovely stretch of seaside with quite a bit of history. There is a sandy spit protruding into the bay littered only with twisted tree trunks and sea shells. A must do for these two beachcombers.
Today's picnic spot - Kaiteriteri

Kaiteriteri Beach in the Spring
Sampling the Monkey Wizard
From Motueka we headed 14 km up the coast to Kaiteriteri, a lovely safe sandy beach area. We had a picnic sitting in the warm sun by the beach. Apparently it is a very busy area in High Season with the sand hidden by towels. Today, one or two youngsters splashed in the water and a few families were dotted about.
Passed some hop fields on the way home, great to see, and also 'The Monkey Wizard Brewery'.
TW convinced me to stop and sample some of its wares, it would be rude not to! I liked the Fat Kelpie, named after a dog? Bought a bottle to consume back at the house.
