NZ Holiday - A waterside wander from Paihia to Opua in The Bay of Islands

On the edge - October 3rd
Walking by the water
Through the bush
Fern Umbrella
Boating  paradise
From our Apartment at the Retreat there is a lovely walking track that follows the coast and passes through native bush. Great views of the sea and we found a grocery store at the end in Opua where we picked up some tasty sandwiches. We sat by the boat dock and watched the comings and goings. There is a car ferry from here that goes over to the Russell side of the bay at Okiato. We are told its better value than the passenger ferry that goes direct from Paihia to Russell. Kevin, our host, is part of a project to restore the local steam train line that used to go to Opua. They need to repair a bridge apparently. Hopefully they will get it finished for next time. There used to be a train line all the way from Auckland to Opua, that would have been quite a ride.
