Gordons Bay and The Strand

The most local beaches to Somerset West are Gordons Bay and the The Strand. Gordons Bay has the look of a traditional seaside resort. A nice sandy beach, a coastal road with plenty of parking. We had a pleasant wander along the coast to Bikini Beach. I had a paddle but decided against a dip. I was a bit concerned about the cleanliness of the water. We had a coffee at one of the beachside Cafes, Sunset Beach Spur. We spoke to an English couple at the next table. They had been regular visitors to South Africa and had lots of tourist tips for us, many of which we followed up. We joined them for lunch at one of their favourite spots, The Waffle Cafe on the front. It was really nice and friendly and very reasonably priced. Our new friends also recommended the Thirsty Oyster in the fishing port. We did not get the opportunity to eat there but it looked interesting. After lunch we took a short drive along the coast to The Strand. It's quite a smart area with tall Apartment blocks. The beach looks magnificent and I had been looking at the webcam from home before we flew out. Unfortunately the water was not clean and actually quite smelly. We had a nice walk along the Esplanade and stopped at De Brasserie for a drink. It seemed fairly safe to walk along there but we were warned that the area to the West was a bit of a hotspot for crime. We did go back a few days later for another walk after our Betty's Bay outing. Some time later in our trip, some folks we met had their car broken into and lost phones and cards etc.
