    If love travelling, you shouldn't miss England. There are a lot of things you discover in the place and if you happen to come by, don't forget to stay in a high quality cottages in Torquay.

   Canterbury Tales - Hanmer Springs and Christchurch. Canterbury in Autumn Heading South from Kaikoura we made a right turn off Highway One and headed west towards the holiday resort of Hanmer Springs. It was a good road, not too busy, just local traffic. Canterbury definitely had its Autumn coat on for us. Lots of trees adorned with colourful leaves. Looking down on Waiau We were not too impressed with our coffee stop in Waiau. We were the only patrons at the Brenda’s on Lyndon Cafe and it was like sitting in a garage. We were glad to get back in the car. It's easy to criticise I suppose. The area was heavily impacted by the Kaikoura earthquake and, as passing tourists, we don't how difficult life is for them now.   Hanmer Springs  Hanmer is a mountain resort offering skiing in winter and various active holiday activities in summer. Spain - Canary Islands - A Postcard from La Palma

Out and about in the Atlantic in February 2018 On the coastal path at Los Concajos There is no threat of a Banana Drama when you go to La Palma, they grow here by the thousand. Have to admit I had never heard of La Palma before we chanced upon some cheap flights. We had just about given up on finding a warmish place to visit for a week in February when TW noticed £70 return last-minute flights to La Palma. Perfect! When you have to get up at 4 in the morning to get a flight you start to doubt whether it is worth the hassle. Well it was very much worth the the effort. La Palma is lovely and the people were great too. TUI plane spotting We knew the forecast before we booked so cannot complain about the weather. Wet and windy with a bit of sunshine - fair enough. Not typical, they even had snow on the mountain tops while we were there! Mind you the mountains are are higher than many an Austrian ski resort as they climb to over 2,400m. England - Castleman Cycle Ride

Castleman Trailway The Castleman Trailway is based upon a disused Railway Line that originally linked Southampton with Dorchester. It is well worth a day in anyone's cycling life. We started in Poole and ended up in Brockenhurst, ready for a beer and the train back to Bournemouth. On the way we passed through Broadstone, Wimborne and Ringwood plus The New Forest.

Austria - E-biking in Gastein- and the high altitude cakes of Austria

Current thoughts on electric assisted cycling in Gastein Heading for  the BiberAlm How did I end up with an e-bike? I have been riding my bikes in Gastein for around 14 years on various trips and I never tire of it. A thousand metre climb from the valley bottom up to a mountain hut for a friendly greeting and a cold beer and cake is a very simple pleasure. Over the last few years I have seen the growth in the use of e-bikes and watched them speed past me as I climb on my MTB. TW has had pedal assist for several years and we often cycled together, she whizzed up the hills as I huffed and puffed. Her having an e-bike meant we could ride together to some of our favourite places like the Baerstein Alm, the FundnerAlm, the Himmelwand, Hauseben and the Hauserbauer in Dorfgastein. Ignoring the cost, I suppose I resisted buying one because hill climbing is the thing I do best and probably the thing that keeps me fit. Austria - Schmaranz Alm - A Bio Beer Bike Ride in Gastein

Taking the High Road The Schmaranz Alm - Scotty on Tour I like to ride my bicycle. And, just like the old Queen song, I like to ride it where I like! On this occasion my extremely likeable target destination was the Schmaranz Hutte high above Bad Hofgastein at nearly 1800m. It is the Summer Alm for a valley farm in the Wieden area  of Bad Hofgastein. The Schmaranz Farm's main claim to fame, in my eyes anyway, is its Bio Brewery. They brew the most delicious beer and the reward for a near 1000 metre climb on my Scotty comes cold and wet in a half litre glass. The route starts behind the Railway station and, today, the time on the Station clock was 11:15 as I passed by. The narrow road winds up through a small community of farms and dwellings before reaching the typical Alpine pastures peppered with a few fruit trees. Birthday Girl on the slopes.

The birthday girl hit the slopes (not literally) resplendent in her new ski jacket. Mother Nature laid on a hot sunny day for her birthday skiing with big brother. Lunch was taken at the Barstein Alm where TW was given a very special schnapps! It looked more like an Irish Coffee! She is a non-drinker but managed to 'force' it down with a smile. That was the end of her ski operations for the day! The snow conditions were excellent up high but it was like skiing in sorbet near the bottom Bit of a celebration in Bad Hofgastein in the evening. Not just for TW. Bernie Gruber from the village won a Vancouver Gold in the Nordic Combined.  That's the event where they Ski Jump then Langlauf (cross-country ski). A really big crowd was out to celebrate. Two town bands marched around town as well as school kids with flags they had made. Youngsters from the ski clubs carried their jumping skis. Walking in November

Even though its very much the off-season there are still plenty of walking paths available on the sunny side of the valley. The Gastein Hohenweg is a level path from Bad Hofgastein to Bad Gastein. Its a walking path built in the 30's to generate work at the time of the Great Depression. It takes a couple of hours, that's of course if you manage to pass by all of the cafe/restaurants en route. There are about six to choose from, Annen Cafe, Jausenstation Grubhof, Sonnberg, Gamskar, Cafe Hubertus, Gamskar. This walkers lunch consisted of a fresh trout with potatoes and a salad. The more adventurous can take routes further up the mountain to the summits, Poserhohe and Gamskarkogel. That's a job for next summer. The Gamskarkogel is claimed to be the highest grass topped mountain in Europe at 2467m and, of course, it has a hut on top for overnight stays or a beer, (closes in September). France - A walk in the Dordogne - Plus Beaux Villages - the prettiest villages

Hotel Bonne Famille in Sarrazac - lovely A very amiable wander through the Plus Beaux Villages We booked our trip to France last year and it was definitely a moment to savour as we made the first steps on our journey through the Dordogne. Turn left out of the Hotel... We were setting out on a self-guided walk through some of the prettiest villages in France. It all seemed easy when we booked and paid our deposit but we did not get the full details and distances until we had paid in full. TW in particular was horrified by some of the daily distances. In fact she put the instructions back in the envelope and hid them behind the lounge sofa until the day we left. I was more concerned about getting to France. This was an Anglo-Australian expedition but we all needed to Travel from Austria where we had spent a week in the Gastein Valley.
