Its not all Beach - the rugged South Coast
We pressed on along the Great Ocean Road through Lorne, a popular seaside resort. Bit bigger than Anglesea and quite busy on this holiday weekend. Fair bit of traffic on the road, the majority of it in a hurry. Most other cars seemed determined to drive as fast as possible on the winding road. They would sit on our tail until we pulled over in a passing place. Think their idea of a scenic drive is to get as close as possible to the backside of our little Yaris. Ours is counting the dead flies on their grills. Not really, its a nice drive and we did not let the weekenders spoil it. We made lots of brief stops along the way but eventually made it to Apollo Bay. Many familiar names on the way like Wye River and Kennett River. Apollo Bay is a seaside resort and fishing harbour. Lots of people were fishing off the harbour wall, or behind the harbour wall! There was a very cold breeze coming from Antarctica! The fishermen were friendly here. At home they sit glumly watching their floats and try and blank everyone out. One guy got very excited because he had hooked a grass whiting. Maybe their reason to be cheerful is that they actually catch fish? We bought our catch from the Harbour Fish Shop and it cooked up nicely in our Motel Microwave. We had found an OK Motel to stay in earlier. TW played the poverty card when booking us at the motel, at Skenes Creek, they normally boost prices over the Melbourne Race weekend. They were very kind people and gave us a good discount as we were staying two nights. Great variety of bird life here at the motel, a lovely narcissist blue wren just flew into our motel window and stunned itself, they like to look at their own reflection. Cockatoo's are very common in the field behind us but apparently are a real pest. They look great in flight and do not deserve to be trapped in cages. Unfortunately it seems they attack TV aerials and cause lots of damage. Rainbow Parrots sit on the grass opposite our room, do not think they could be a problem?
